As part of the 2025 Taipei Art Week program, we are pleased to present Ever Unsettled: Works by Kiyoshi Hamada—the artist’s first solo exhibition in Taipei. The exhibition will be held at LIGHTWELL, an art space located in Zhongshan District, from October 18 to November 2, 2025.

This exhibition traces the trajectory of Hamada’s decades-long practice, showcasing works from his early printmaking to more recent explorations. Titled 一所不住 (Issho-fujū) in Japanese—a Zen Buddhist phrase meaning “ever unsettled” or “not residing in one place”—the exhibition reflects Hamada’s unwavering commitment over more than 50 years to continually evolving his artistic expression without complacency.

Beginning his career as a printmaker, Hamada has developed a diverse body of work across mediums, guided by the philosophy of 一所不住. His work resists categorization, demonstrating an ongoing pursuit of new forms and ideas.

Earlier this year, a major retrospective at the Museum of Art, Kochi—his hometown—sparked renewed attention to Hamada’s oeuvre. We invite you to experience the breadth of his artistic journey here in Taipei.

ARTISTS

浜田浄
Kiyoshi Hamada

Kiyoshi Hamada (浜田 浄) was born in 1937 in Kochi, Japan. Following graduation from Tama Art University in 1961, Hamada became acquainted with leading post-war Japanese avant-garde artists, such as Yoshishige Saito, and began pursuing abstract modes of production. He received an Honorable Mention at the Osaka Biennale of Prints Competition of 1977 and, with much acclaim, has been active in various domestic and international exhibitions. In 2015, he held a solo exhibition, “The Legacy of Kiyoshi Hamada – Paintings of Layering and Erasing”, at the Nerima Art Museum. With great promise, Hamada’s oeuvre has developed over time. Nevertheless, from his iconic Drawing series to his recent monochrome semi-cultural works, Hamada’s preoccupation with the “systems” of production has remained essential to his work.

His works have been acquired by various museums, such as the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (Japan), Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (Japan), Artizon Museum (Tokyo, Japan), and the Kraków Museum of Art (Poland).
